At SPARC, we’re always looking for ways to improve the accuracy of diagnosis and the quality of care we provide. One of the most valuable tools now available in our clinic is musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound imaging – a non-invasive, real-time method of looking inside the body to assess muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues.

We’ve introduced this service in partnership with Kevin Cronin, a consultant musculoskeletal sonographer and specialist in lower limb injuries – especially the hamstring muscle group. Kevin brings extensive experience to SPARC and now runs a weekly diagnostic imaging clinic on-site.

What Is Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Imaging?

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a safe, fast, and dynamic way to assess soft tissue structures such as:

  • Muscle tears and strains

  • Tendon injuries

  • Ligament issues

  • Joint inflammation or fluid

  • Post-surgical healing

  • Scar tissue formation

Unlike MRI or X-ray, ultrasound allows the clinician to assess the area in motion, providing a real-time, interactive view of how tissues behave under load, stretch, or movement. It also allows us to compare both sides of the body to identify subtle changes or differences.

How We Use Ultrasound Imaging at SPARC

At SPARC, we use ultrasound imaging in three key ways:

1. Accurate Diagnosis

Whether you're dealing with an acute hamstring injury, a chronic tendon issue, or post-surgical symptoms, MSK ultrasound helps us pinpoint the exact location, size, and severity of an injury. This precision improves the quality of your rehab plan and reduces guesswork.

2. Monitoring Progress

One of the most valuable aspects of ultrasound is its ability to track tissue healing over time. If you’re returning to play after a muscle injury, we can monitor the repair of the tissue, identify any lingering scar tissue, and assess readiness for higher-level loading.

3. Guiding Rehab Decisions

MSK ultrasound supports data-led rehab, allowing us to adapt your treatment plan based on how your injury is truly healing – not just how it feels. We use it to confirm when it's safe to progress strength work, introduce running, or return to sport.

Why It Matters

Muscle and tendon injuries can be complex. Getting your rehab right means getting the right diagnosis – and having confidence in your recovery milestones. With musculoskeletal ultrasound available at SPARC, you now have access to hospital-grade diagnostics, right here in our clinic.

If you’re currently managing an injury – or have had recurrent issues that haven’t settled – Kevin’s MSK ultrasound clinic is open for bookings. Speak to your physiotherapist or contact reception to learn more.
